Meeting, Experiencing and Discovering the Cultural Beauty of Vietnam and Singapore with Students from Raffles Institution
As part of their journey of discovering Vietnam at Nguyễn Tất Thành Lower and Upper Secondary School, a delegation of teachers and students from Raffles Institution (Singapore) took part in a variety of exchange and cultural activities. These ranged from stories about language, cuisine, education and school life in Singapore to hands-on explorations of Vietnamese culture, such as learning traditional dance and making Hanoi spring rolls (nem). Each experience gave students from both schools a chance to learn more about each other’s country, people and way of life.
More than just a visit and an exchange, the Singaporean students’ journey at Nguyễn Tất Thành Lower and Upper Secondary School brought moments full of laughter, sharing and memorable cultural experiences between students from the two countries.
During the classroom exchange sessions, the Raffles students shared stories about Singapore in a warm and lively way. Rather than dry facts on the pages of a textbook, Singapore came to life through the words, images and experiences of young people who live and study in the island nation. Through these sessions, the cultural exchange went beyond introducing each country’s identity. It also gave students from both schools the chance to interact, broaden their understanding, learn to respect differences and grow closer through genuine, personal experiences.
Raffles Institution students introduce the distinctive features of Singlish, a variety of English that strongly reflects Singaporean identity.
The Raffles students introduced their Nguyễn Tất Thành peers to many distinctive aspects of Singapore, including its language, cuisine, education and school life. From amusing Singlish expressions (the way Singaporeans use English) to the country’s signature dishes, they shared many relatable stories about Singaporean culture and daily life. Their accounts of how students choose subjects and take part in group activities also helped both sides better understand each other’s learning environment.
The classroom came alive as students from the two schools interacted and exchanged ideas.
Following the cultural exchange sessions, the Singaporean students joined a meaningful activity steeped in Vietnamese identity: learning traditional dances. Throughout the session, the Raffles teachers and students watched attentively and eagerly tried out each new movement. Though hesitant and unsure at first, their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn made the atmosphere increasingly lively. As they grew more comfortable with the movements, excitement and delight lit up every face. Moving from initial uncertainty to the joy of dancing in rhythm, the session not only gave the Raffles delegation a first-hand experience of Vietnamese culture but also reflected the openness and spirit of connection between the two schools.
Members of the Raffles delegation eagerly learn traditional Vietnamese dance movements to a lively beat.
To round off the series of cultural activities, the Raffles students explored Vietnamese cuisine by making Hanoi spring rolls with members of the English Club (E4E). Using familiar ingredients such as rice paper, pork, eggs, glass noodles, wood ear mushrooms and shiitake mushrooms, they were guided to roll the spring rolls themselves and mix a sweet and sour fish sauce dip to enjoy with them. Amid clumsy first attempts and bursts of laughter, students from both schools cooked and chatted together, sharing stories from their everyday lives. A familiar dish thus became a bridge for new friends to meet, share a cultural experience and create another lasting memory of their school years.

Days at Nguyễn Tất Thành Lower and Upper Secondary School gave Raffles Institution students the opportunity to discover Vietnamese culture through a wide range of experiences, from conversations about language, education and school life to dance practice and spring-roll making. Each activity not only helped students from both schools better understand each other’s culture and surroundings but also created moments of closeness, in which language and cultural barriers gradually gave way to openness, sharing and the joy of discovery. It is hoped that the wonderful memories from this exchange will leave a lasting impression and open up more opportunities for students of Nguyễn Tất Thành Lower and Upper Secondary School and Raffles Institution to stay connected, learn from each other and continue their journeys together in the years ahead.
